Drawing on knowledge gleaned from overseas training, practical sea experience and a superior international network, the brokers offer customers significant expertise and creative solutions for their ship, cargo and freight transportation requirements.

Each broker is independently active within local maritime associations and cargo industry groups. Working with peers, friends and colleagues within these associations, CTL brokers' activities help shape the decisions of both regional and international shipping policies.

As General Manager, Daryl Raibl oversees the brokers' activities as well as the company's day-to-day operations. A member of the CTL team since 1980, he has worked as a broker in Norway , Hong Kong and is fully established in Vancouver .

In addition to his managerial responsibilities, Daryl provides chartering services to a varied clientele involved in time charter and voyage transactions. Drawing on his significant expertise in dry cargo as well as sale and purchase, he brings to the company specific industry knowledge about steel, grains, fertilizers, and forest products as well as the related charter parties. His specialties are box-shaped, open and semi-open type ships.

Daryl is a member of the North American branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London (MCIArb) and has completed the Association of Ship Brokers and Agents course. He is Past President of the Vancouver Maritime Arbitrators Association.

Richard Helm has to his credit more than 23 years of experience as both a charterer and broker in the dry cargo and tanker trades. Prior to joining the company in 1990, he spent five years in London, England, where he traded bulk commodities including physical, forward, futures and options contracts. Richard is actively involved in chartering vessels to cover spot requirements or long term contracts for the carriage of grain, woodchips, mineral products and other bulk commodities as well as for period timecharter..

Richard is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, a past Chair of the Canada Branch and is currently serving the ICS International Membership Committee.  He is also a past director and member of the Vancouver Grain Exchange.

Geoff McNeill has broad experience in the Vancouver shipping industry, having worked the last 15 years in shipbroking, ship agency and freight forwarding. Currently he applies his shipping expertise to the grain, steels and forest industries, working closely with a large network of bulk and container ship owners.

Geoff is a graduate of the Pacific Maritime Training Institue of BCIT and is a chartered shipbroker. Since 2001, Geoff has been a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbroking .

Returning to the CTL team of brokers, Bernie Jones focuses on Sale & Purchase and New building projects where his main concentration is developing projects in period time charter, purchase options and joint ventures. Since arriving in Canada in 1992 he has regularly acted as Federal Court Sheriff in proceedings against ships that have been arrested on the Canadian West Coast. With more than 30 years of shipbroking experience in senior positions at London and Hong Kong, ship arrest is an area where he has had extensive experience.

Mr. Jones' other areas of endeavour include ship finance, ship management and most recently, he assisted in the establishment of Seaspan Container Lines. He has also been called as an expert witness to assist financial institutions in valuations and appraisals of ships.

Mike Shigley joined CTL Westrans in 1987 after nine years of experience in agency, stevedoring and shipbroking on the U.S. West Coast. Now based in Seattle, he brings valuable commercial and operational expertise to a range of forestry-related projects in North America, Chile, New Zealand, and Australia. His special areas of concentration are logs, full and part cargoes as well as wood chips and scrap cargoes on both voyage and time charter basis. Mike also provides parcel cargo chartering services for a number of mineral companies.

Rich joined CTL Westrans in August 2006 after six years as a ship agent with our sister company Compass Marine Services. Other notable posts include inspector for CFIA Harbour Operations (Agriculture Canada) and field supervisor in British Columbia's forestry sector. Rich focuses on global break-bulk shipments such as steels, forest products, machinery and heavy-lift/project cargo as well as shares duties in CTL's diverse bulk commodity mix. Conversant in French and Spanish, Rich has diplomas in Maritime Law and Principles of Chartering from the Association of Ship Brokers and Agents(ASBA).

Hayden Lee, who joined CTL Westrans as Post Fixture in early 2008, has more than 10 years of shipping industry experience. Hayden drafts all charter parties and booking notes as well as follows up on freight invoices and lay-time calculations. He manages all fixture files and post fixture related exchanges between principals as well as assists in container bookings and liaises with internal accounting.

Prior to joining CTL, Hayden worked in operations at Gearbulk Shipping Canada Ltd. where he managed the daily co-ordination of cargo loading and discharge operations. Before moving to Canada in 2001, he was with Changjiang National Shipping (Group) Corporation in China working in various departments including Crew Management, Operations and Commercial.

Hayden earned his CITT designation in Supply Chain & Transportation Management at the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation.  He also has a Diploma of Technology in International Trade and Transportation from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
